Arlberg is both dramatic and gentle so you get a bit of everything. L.L. ⁄ Did you enjoy working here in winter or in summer more? T.H. ⁄ Although I am a big skier I have discovered that summer in Lech is more beautiful than winter – nature reveals itself and the colours and sounds are magical. The winter landscape is more monochrome than the summer landscape. L.L. ⁄ Do you prefer black and white photography, i.e. playing with contrasts, or colour? T.H. ⁄ I like de- saturated colour and use that a lot – however if a secene is particularly graphic I will switch it in to b/w. L.L. ⁄ Do you have a favourite motive here on Arlberg? T.H. ⁄ My favourite view is towards the Carhorn and Burstegg with the Wilderstein behind in summer or on the Hassenfluh looking down - when the clouds come up the Flexenpass. L.L. ⁄ There are hardly any photographs you’re in. Do you prefer to leave the limelight to your works? T.H. ⁄ That’s why im on the other side of the camera – don’t like being photographed particularly. L.L. ⁄ Do you sometimes take a picture with a smartphone? A selfie maybe? Of and with your family? T.H. ⁄ Since my daughters are obsessed by taking smart phone selifies I have got more used to having my picture taken and now I do appear on instagram from time to time! „Above the Clouds – landscapes from the Arlberg mountains“ 44 The 108-page photo book by the London-based photographer is a collection of truly magical landscapes and moments in the changing seasons. Hall pays homage to the Arlberg with its smooth, yet mighty, even monumental landscapes. There are no closeups of people, the photographer prefers to play with scales instead. Skiers are presented as tiny protagonists in the midst of the overwhelming landscape. With his photographs he manages to gently communicate everything the Arlberg stands for and at the same time he manages to make the observer feel relaxed, almost mystical.
