engl. ⁄ Gerhard Walter

engl. ⁄ Gerhard Walter is one of Austria’s most experienced tourism professionals and since 2013 he has been in charge of Kitzbühel Tourism. With a pinch of pride for his region he explained to LA LOUPE, what exactly makes the legendary sports town in the Alps so mythical. L.L. After stations in Lech and Galtür you “arrived” in Kitzbühel two years ago. What is it that you find so fascinating about alpine tourism? G.W. Well I’m definitely a child of the mountains. I was born in Galtür at an altitude of 1,600 metres and so the alpine topic has basically been with me since childhood. Of course I enjoy being at the sea, too. But the Alps and the people who live here are very special. L.L. In an interview you mentioned that the worldwide brand of Kitzbühel cannot be compared with other Austrian tourism regions. What did you mean by that? G.W. My experience, after two years in Kitzbühel, is that the place is known to many in the German-speaking region but that everyone associates something different with the “Gamsstadt”. A taxi driver in Vienna wrongly thinks “I’ll never be able to afford that”. A keen skier asks if I’ve ever tried the Streif slope and how much time it takes me to race it. Of course the Streif contributes a lot to the myth that is Kitzbühel, it’s incredibly fascinating to people. In late autumn I was in the USA with Red Bull Media House and Ski Club Kitzbühel for the premiere of the film “STREIF – one hell of a ride”. We were able to greet many journalists, media people, fans of Austria and ski-aficionados. Hardly any other Austrian destination would be able to cause such a hype. 82 L.L. What does your work life look like? How much foresight and openness do you need for your job? G.W. There are weeks where I spend five days at my desk, in other weeks I’m out and about and hardly at the office. So my job is actually pretty varied. Our goal for the coming years is to become the leading year-round destination in the alpine region.

Which is quite ambitious. So of course all decision-makers need a vision and openness in everything they do. L.L. Does your work look different in summer than in winter? G.W. In winter I go to work in a sweater and parka, in summer you might see me wearing short lederhosen. Aside from that there really isn’t much of a difference. We plan very far ahead and are already deep in the details for the coming year. Of course it’s important to also be able to take some time off, relax and go on holiday with the family. L.L. What sort of image are you as the manager looking to project to the outside? G.W. Our strategy is such that we want to present ourselves as the most legendary sports city of the Alps. Legendary to me means that we’re able to tell exciting, vivid stories. That’s something I can represent with a clear conscience. L.L. How do people from Kitzbühel see themselves? G.W. I think they are aware of the fact that they live in a very special place and they are very proud of it, without airs and graces. They don’t really see the exclusive air, the fame. They simply feel at home. It’s “our Kitzbühel”. L.L. The Hahnenkamm race is one of the most famous in the entire skiing world. How do you perceive this event? G.W. The Hahnenkamm-weekends have been taking place – with a few interruptions – since 1931 and for all of us it’s the highlight of the event calendar. In many areas the place really reaches its limits for this occasion. 100,000 people come to Kitzbühel, they celebrate their athletic heroes and have a huge party in the entire town. The media coverage is enormous and all the beds in the region are occupied. The preparations for this practically take place all year round. Sport & Freizeit “Well I’m definitely a child of the mountains. I was born in Galtür at an altitude of 1,600 metres and so the alpine topic has basically been with me since childhood.” “Of course the Streif contributes a lot to the myth that is Kitzbühel, it’s incredibly fascinating to people.” “Our goal for the coming years is to become the leading year-round destination in the alpine region.” 83
