on day two of the seminar. Et voilà: your self-made piece of winter sports equipment is ready. “If you’re looking for a supersale or cheapo-weekend, you’ll look in vain. We sell real craftsmanship and that’s going to stay like this.” “When you sell products that are made-to-measure you can’t just have the customer test something. Which is why we talk about every rider’s needs and wishes in detail beforehand.” L.L. ⁄ Can you compare the quality to that of renowned brands? A.F. ⁄ We are way too small to produce low-quality skis. Because many producers have minimum order quantities we can only buy racing edges and coatings and we need wooden cores that are made especially for us. Especially coloured coatings have to be bought together with other custom-makers. The minimum quantity here is 2 km, which translates to 500 pairs of skis in one colour. And with the sandwich process that we use, the quality is always high. Because of the different types of fabrics that are combined with the wood, our skis are extremely high-quality. L.L. ⁄ Does one have the choice between different types of skis? A.F. ⁄ Yes, each customer has to assess their own level of skill. There is the passionate skier who has really tried out every type of ski and sounded them all out. They know exactly what they want. Others prefer to describe what their skiing days look like and with our catalogue of questions we find out together what the right model is for them. In total we offer nine standardised products with elements that can be chosen flexibly. L.L. ⁄ How would you describe your typical customer? A.F. ⁄ Our first customers were professionals from the skiing scene. Then came the “geeks” who brought a lot of knowledge about the different materials. Meanwhile many recreational athletes come to us, too. Their motives are all different. The wish for individual design, interest in the production process, the “seeking the experience” or the search for a cool present are what lead people to us. Our seminar is structured in a way to make sure our trainers always guide and help you through the process. No special skills or manual dexterity are needed to take part in the courses. 108 L.L. ⁄ Where do you trainers come from? Do they need special training? A.F. ⁄ Ski building used to be an apprenticeship. Today that doesn’t exist anymore. We have perfected our craft through endless testing. Every ski building trainer has to know every step of the process

down to the tiniest detail. We also hire experienced interns who combine their job with us with scientific research. Many come from the big technical colleges for sports equipment technology in Vienna and Chemnitz. Sport & Freizeit L.L. ⁄ Would you say there are trends in terms of the skis’ visual appearance? What are the possiblities in this context? A.F. ⁄ The hobby ski builders’ design ideas are manifold. Most of the time printed motifs or complete designs are brought along and incorporated into the process. Basically there are a lot of options. We’ve worked with soup noodles and curtain fabric before. Meanwhile, the customers experiment less though, they prefer high-quality, stylish design. One of today’s trends are lasered reliefs made from different veneers. Or you could use your own photographs from a heliskiing trip in Canada and have them printed on fabric by our graphics-guy – fabric which is then laminated. Of course you could also use lace fabric etc. The price range here is quite wide, of course. L.L. ⁄ Do you offer your services for other pieces of sport equipment, too? A.F. ⁄ Our customers have long pointed out that our concept of building your own and experiencing the process could also be interesting for other pieces of sports equipment. We are now getting started on a bicycle. In this case we obviously focus on consultation first. The bike is fitted exactly to the customers’ measurements. When everything is prepared our mechanics assemble the whole thing and apply the varnish. And on the side we provide interesting information on the technology behind it. The demand in the Southern German area is growing. And here we do not only address the cool individualists but people who are looking for particular sizes like to come to us, too. L.L. ⁄ How long beforehand would one have to register for your workshops? A.F. ⁄ Well we are now fully booked for the months of November and December. As an individual you often have the chance to slip into a time slot somewhere, though. But if you’re interested you should definitely contact us as early as possible. We take a maximum of ten participants per workshop. By the way: we’re going to expand in summer. There will be different shows, something to demonstrate and even more counselling. 109
