LA LOUPE Garmisch - Partenkirchen No. 1 www.laloupe.com

‘Each year, 500,000

‘Each year, 500,000 guests come to Zugspitze with all kinds of different ideas.’ (Klaus Schanda) ‘Many of our guests check out the webcams before breakfast at their hotel and then they use this information to decide where to go for their day trip.’ (Klaus Schanda) ‘Right now our guests’ desire to reach the mountains fast and safely makes us think about rebuilding the Eibsee cable car.’ (Klaus Schanda) ‘As a modern service provider it is always our goal to authentically combine tradition and modernity.’ (Klaus Schanda) 48 with our guests’ needs. That’s somewhat conservative, responsible and offers everyone the freedom to do themselves good. L.L. ⁄ And finally: Garmisch-Partenkrichen is a member of ‘Best of the Alps’. Your favorite place in the Alps? P.N. ⁄ Garmisch and Partenkirchen, ‘because it’s home!’. L.L. ⁄ And now on to you, Mr. Schanda: What makes the mountain railways & cable cars around Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grainau so special? K.s. ⁄ What’s special about the mountains railways is that our offer is not limited to winter and the skiing areas, we actually present ourselves as an attractive all-year-round destination to our guests, where we offer something for every taste and demand. Which means that ambitioned mountaineers and international tourists as well as families with children or seniors find what’s perfect for them. L.L. ⁄ Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Germany’s number 1 winter sports destination. Who’s your biggest competitor in the fight for the guests’ favor? K.s. ⁄ Well basically our competitors are skiing resorts that can compete when it comes to proximity and connection to the capital Munich, i.e. mostly the skiing resorts close to Salzburg by the motorway A8. When it comes to skiing resorts in our direct proximity we increasingly support cooperation. The best example for this would be the popular Top Snow Card, a card that offers our guests 216 kilometers of pistes and 84 lifts in Germany and Austria! L.L. ⁄ Zugspitzbahn fulfills a ‚historical task‘, so to say, i.e. making the summit reachable for every citizen. Does this mean that on the mountain we are all equal? K.s. ⁄ Our 500,000 guests come to Zugspitze with all kinds of different ideas. While mountaineers from all over the world want to climb Zugspitze and cross ‘Jubiläumsgrat’ (Jubilee Arête), many European, American and Asian tourists come here to see Germany’s highest mountain and enjoy the fantastic view of 4 countries from ‘Germany’s roof ’. Some of our Arabic guests visit Zugspitze to see snow for the first time in their lives. All these different desires and needs are what we – with our mountain railways’ comprehensive year-round range of offers – are trying to fulfill.

L.L. ⁄ Do technical gimmicks such as the modern webcam system attract new target groups? K.s. ⁄ Our new, modern 360° panoramic cameras are mostly an additional service for our customers, triggering emotions and bringing back a certain longing for the mountains around Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grainau before the holiday even starts. Apart from that they also offer live images 24 hours a day which facilitates the planning phase for a hike and makes observing the current weather situation a lot easier, too. Many of our guests check out the webcams before breakfast at their hotel and then they use this information to decide where to go for their day trip. Ever since we installed the webcams this service has been accepted well by our customers and meanwhile, in the age of smartphones, free Wi-Fi hotspots and UMTS connections it’s become somewhat essential for every modern business. L.L. ⁄ Are there any new development or lift projects planned you can tell us about? K.s. ⁄ As a mountain railway business our requirements in connection with safety and comfort are great. And over the course of time our guests’ expectations have risen, too. Which is why, during the past years, we have thoroughly modernized the ski resort Garmisch-Classic and invested 9.5 m Euro at Zugspitze and for a new 6-seater chair lift at Wetterwandeck. Right now our guests’ desire to reach the mountains fast and safely makes us think about rebuilding the Eibsee-cable car. L.L. ⁄ Would you say that, in the mountain railway sector, traditionalism, sustainability and openness towards zeitgeist are compatible? K.s. ⁄ As a modern service provider it is always our goal to authentically combine tradition and modernity. On the one hand we offer events like our nostalgic tours with the 1930s Bavarian Zugspitzbahn’s original locomotives or brass music festivals and events with Bavarian specialties as tangible tradition, on the other hand we do act as a modern business when it comes to marketing and sales, occupying ourselves with new markets like no other. In this respect the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn tries to network and use nationwide as well as international cooperation in order to create ever new opportunities. There’s a reason why 1.1 m people from all over the world visit us each year! Thanks for the talk! sport & Freizeit 49
