L.L. ⁄ How does it feel to be the fittest man in the Universe? B.Ö. ⁄ The first title really gets to you. Makes you hold your head a little higher. With the years and after several titles you develop a routine and a kind of addiction, too. You want to prove to yourself that you’re capable of beating the whole world’s elite one more time. Quitting after years at the top is really hard. I had already ended my career but then I started a comeback last year to prove to myself and my clients that it’s possible to do it once more even after an injury – I had suffered a complicated break. And 12 weeks after the surgery I became Fitness World Champion once more! L.L. ⁄ How did you come up with the idea to write the cookbook “Kerngesund – Die Arlberg Diät”? B.Ö. ⁄ Well, when I published my first cookbook I had the idea to write a second one. I wanted to write about nutrition again but this time about my own concept, a concept which I’d already been applying while working with people on their training and coaching them when it came to their nutrition. The title came easily because the Arlberg is a region that’s ideal for increasing one’s wellbeing and recharging one’s batteries. People from Lech and Zürs are sort of original and very healthy people. The book’s principle is to create a healthy equilibrium between proteins, carbohydrates and fat. The dishes that are described a rated with stars – just like hotels. The ones with the highest quality have 5 stars, so 70% protein. So the book is a type of guide with many great recipes. 62 L.L. ⁄ So you’d say that the Arlberg is ideal for guests who’d like to sustainably rethink their eating and sports habits? B.Ö. ⁄ Exactly! In winter most guests come for the skiing. In summer we offer the possibility to get to know and learn to apply my concept in a “Body Camp”. They are personally taken care of by my partner hotels and myself. There’s a breakfast that includes nutrition counselling and then there’s
an individual all-day sports programme and real healthy food. So for people who are looking for real wellbeing and are looking into developing a healthier lifestyle, our summer Body Camps are perfect! I have partner hotels I work with all over the Arlberg region. But basically I can be booked anywhere, provided that I have the time. Sport & Freizeit L.L. ⁄ What kind of products are preferred as part of the Arlberg-diet? B.Ö. ⁄ Especially products that are rich in protein. And as a compensation vegetables and fruit are important, carbohydrates are reduced. Regional products are very important to me. What with the fast-food that’s available everywhere and the fact that there are so many overweight children, I think the people really need to chance their way of thinking. L.L. ⁄ Your two books contain recipes that really make you want to start cooking. Do you think many diets are abruptly ended because they’re too tiresome to see through? B.Ö. ⁄ Well, betting on all kinds of crash-diet will only get you a yo-yo-effect. That’s not the case with the Arlberg-diet. You mustn’t let yourself be fooled by the word “diet” because in this case it means “high quality and equilibrated nutrition”. If you stick to my rules you won’t have a problem seeing it through and you won’t gain weight again. “Whether or not someone is capable of keeping up the discipline is what really makes the difference between winning and losing.’” “There really is nothing wrong with good chocolate!” “The first title really gets to you. Makes you hold your head a little higher.” L.L. ⁄ And who cooks at your house? B.Ö. ⁄ Most of the time I do. I’m no star chef but I can cook a little, mostly because I had to during all the years of cooking for myself at competitions. Every once in a while I like to swing by Hotel Mama, too. L.L. ⁄ You just developed a fitness-app. Who is it intended for and what does it do? B.Ö. ⁄ The idea for “SmartFitness” came up because my time is increasingly limited. Due to the fact that I have numerous long-standing clients I can hardly ever take on new clients. Via smartphone however I’m always happy to be there for everyone as a coach. Anyone who’s interested can simply download an individual programme and simply work out with me at home – no matter if they want a six-pack, sexy slim legs or arms like Hercules!
