L.L. ⁄ What would you

L.L. ⁄ What would you say makes a successful handover of a business? A.W. ⁄ Well that it works out – despite the difficulties that arise because of the differences in between the generations – and that one gets the impression everything will continue to work out just fine. L.L. ⁄ Looking back to your time as boss of the hotel: what are you particularly proud of? A.W. ⁄ There’s nothing I’m particularly proud of, apart from the fact that Gerda and I lead the Hospiz for nearly 50 years and that we invested the money that we earned over and over. L.L. ⁄ With the Hospiz you coined tourism around the Arlberg for nearly 50 years. What would you say was the biggest change that took place in the past decades, which development surprised you the most? A.W. ⁄ Well the biggest change certainly was the great increase in beds. About 50 years ago there were a total of 6,000 beds around the Arlberg, today there are 22,000. Of course that means that competition has increased, too. What surprises me most is the guests’ holiday habits. Our long standing guests used to book their Christmas, February and Easter holidays. Today people travel at much shorter notice; they go on holiday more often but stay for shorter periods of time when they do. L.L. ⁄ ‚In winter the Hospiz and the Arlberg in general have reached a level of quality that’s hard to beat. The big challenge is to improve the rest of the year’ is what your son Florian said in last year’s La Loupe interview. What are your thoughts on this? A.W. ⁄ From my point of view the challenge lies in keeping up the quality standards. The season is certainly going to become longer but keeping the Hospiz and other places around the Arlberg open all year round is wishful thinking, if you ask me, I don’t think that’s going to happen. 34 L.L. ⁄ Your wine cellar contains one of the world’s biggest collections of wines in large bottles – up to the Melchior-bottles that hold 18 litres. When was the last time you opened one of those? A.W. ⁄ We had a wedding two weeks ago where we opened three of them. We mostly need those kinds of bottles at birthdays, weddings and similar events, or when we have 15 to 20 persons from our circle of friends over. Every year we open between 150 and 160 bottles.

L.L. ⁄ You are probably not going to drink most of the wine you buy today. Do you sometimes envision the moment when your successors enjoy it? A.W. ⁄ In order to keep the quality of a wine cellar high, one has to buy wine every year. So it’s in the nature of the thing that later generations are going to enjoy the wine. A bottle from a good vintage can be stored for 50, 60, 70 years nowadays and I like the idea that one day my grandchildren are going to enjoy the wine I once bought. L.L. ⁄ You took over the St. Christoph Brotherhood in 1964 when it had 126 members. How many are there now and is there a certain number you’re looking to reach? A.W. ⁄ Right now we stand at about 19,800, so we’re close to the magical 20,000. But of course one has to constantly set new goals! What’s most important though is that in the course of this winter we’re going to help the 10,000th family with the membership fee and donations from the Brotherhood. Since 1977 we’ve helped people with more than 14 million euros! L.L. ⁄ You currently are the Brotherhood’s master. Do you feel this honorary task is as fulfilling as working in the luxury hotel business? A.W. ⁄ Well, I wouldn’t call it luxury hotel, I’d rather say event hotel. We are “first class” of course, but the word “luxury” is a little over the top. The brotherhood fulfils me insofar as the success is a motivation to go on. We’re able to accept between 500 and 600 members per year and that’s what motivates me. “The challenge lies in keeping up the good quality standards.” “Nearly 50 years ago there were about 6,000 beds around the Arlberg, today there are 22,000.” “I like the idea that one day my grandchildren are going to enjoy the wine I once bought.” “As a host you’re always involved in running the house, especially when you like your job.” “My only personal plan is to grow 100 years old!” L.L. ⁄ So what does luxury mean to you? A.W. ⁄ I couldn’t really say. Today we’re able to afford nearly everything anyway. So that’s nearly normality, really. Luxury means being able to buy things – but not needing them. L.L. ⁄ And how about your wishes and plans for the future? A.W. ⁄ Well for the Hospiz I hope that things are going to continue to develop positively. There are no plans for my retirement because as a host you’re always involved in running the house, especially when you like your job. The only personal plan I have is to grow 100 years old! 35
