The finish line is in sight and the running coach from Munich knows exactly how to motivate her mentees. Not only did Bianca Meyer win the GENERALI MÜNCHEN MARATHON in 2017, with her running school Running Company she also helps avid runners to reach their individual athletic goals. In her interview with La Loupe she reminisced about her success of 2017, provided insights into her own training routine, and shared her very own Munich-hotspots.
L.L. They say that behind ever marathon runner there is a story – something that motivates them and pushes them to top performances. What is yours? B.M. In my case it was more of a coincidence. I wanted to register for a triathlon because back then I was still an active track and field athlete (1,500 metre and 5,000 metre running) and wanted to try something else for a change. The track and field season ends at the end of August – which is also when the triathlons are all done. So, I thought I might do a marathon. I specifically trained for it for only four weeks and then ran my first marathon in Frankfurt in 1995. By now I’ve done more than 20. L.L. In 2017 you won the GENERALI MÜNCHEN MARATHON with a time of 2:49:32 hours. Was that a dream come true? B.M. Absolutely! It really was a big goal of mine. To win this race in my hometown. And the third time round I finally did it, according to the motto: third time’s a charm. I was beyond happy and it was truly breathtaking to be the first to cross the finish line in the Olympic Stadium. L.L. How did you train for this running event? Could you describe a typical training week? B.M. I train year-round, but I only spent 13 weeks training for the marathon specifically last time. During this time, I ran 1,250 kilometres, so about 100 kilometres per week. That’s not actually very much, other marathon runners do much more. I train five or six days a week, a rest day is important for my body and my mind. I never run the entire distance beforehand, it simply is too straining. And I never run for longer than 2:40 hours. Laufen & Lifestyle BIANCA MEYER’S WORDRAP On the Monday after GENERALI MÜNCHEN MARATHON ... I have no appointments. I’ll either be celebrating, recovering from the celebrations, or licking my wounds. My goal for 2018: To run and have fun and hopefully be the first to cross the finish line of GENERALI MÜNCHEN MARATHON again, no matter on which route. My favourite part of the GENERALI MÜNCHEN MARATHON route: The part between the German Museum and Odeonsplatz. I find all sections that go uphill particularly tiring. What I always bring with me for a run: an audiobook. Toast with honey as a marathon breakfast? Yes, I’ve had that before. What’s important is to have something light that doesn’t burden the stomach before the race. 59
